MotoGP: Bagnaia claims pole position at Mugello

Brazilian rider goes fastest ahead of Casadei and Zaccone

Francesco Bagnaia has stormed to pole position for the MotoGP race at Mugello, ahead of Marco Bezzecchi and Enea Bastianini. The Italian rider was in dominant form throughout qualifying, setting a new lap record at the circuit with a time of 1:45.419. Bezzecchi was just 0.033 seconds behind Bagnaia, with Bastianini a further 0.023 seconds back in third.

The top three were the only riders to break the 1:46 barrier, with Johann Zarco the closest challenger in fourth, 0.151 seconds off the pace. Jack Miller was fifth quickest, ahead of Aleix Espargaro, Fabio Quartararo, Marc Marquez, Maverick ViƱales and Brad Binder.

Bagnaia's pole position is his first of the 2023 season, and it will give him a crucial advantage in Sunday's race. The Italian rider has won at Mugello twice before, in 2018 and 2021, and he will be hoping to make it a hat-trick of victories this weekend.
